Peabody’s Designer Emily Winters creative vision transformed this house into an oasis of bold patterns and hues, to create a family home with a joyful atmosphere. Style was very important to the clients, a couple who wanted something fun and fresh, but with a nod to tradition. Their only requests, a bar space, an island and a space to dine in the kitchen and they did not want white all-painted kitchen cabinetry. The designer started with a bold Schumacher wallpaper and the rest of the design followed naturally. The wallpaper also established the house’s palette of merlot, walnut and shades of blue. Neutral creams and grays balance the bold colors. New furniture, subtle wallpaper and a bright green ceiling combined with some original furnishings in the dining room reinforce a sense of home. Walls were removed between the bar and the dining area of the kitchen, and part of a kitchen wall was removed to create the mudroom. In the kitchen the juxtaposition of the cabinets in walnut and in a rich shade of merlot realize the designer’s vision. Metal brackets on the wood hood may be the smallest detail, but they make a big difference. Keeping some original features, like the floors in the foyer, maintained the house’s historic character. This renovation is vibrant, welcoming and comfortable for everyday family use and in keeping with the bones of the house, which is exactly what they were going for.
